When we found out hubby could lose some hours at work I begin to immediately review what areas we are
overspending. Just like many other people we were overspending in the grocery
area. I needed to see where in our grocery list we were overspending and fix
it. I found the reason: snacks and convenience foods. I told myself, “time to stop
being lazy and get to work.”
Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. The second is this:'Love your neighbor as yourself.' There is no commandment greater than these. Mark 12:30-31

10 Easy Ways to Become Frugal

Our journey to become debt free has brought me to a lot of research and ideas on how to save money. I have read many, many blogs, read tons of Dave Ramsey advice, spoke with friends, learned somethings from my parents, and prayer. When we first started on our journey I had no idea where to begin. To me, it seemed like all these bloggers were experts in saving money and award winning cook in the kitchen. I wanted that. I wanted to learn all their tricks and trades. One thing I have learned is that I am still learning. As humans we can always learn new things. Sometimes we have to step out of our comfort zones to learn new things, but when we do we are amazed by what we have learned.
I wanted to share with you ten ways that you can become more frugal and save money. You do not have to start with all ten, you can adapt to one or two, or even more. Just remember you know what works for your family and what your family needs. The list of ten is what I started with and continue to use today. A couple of them (laundry and dishwasher soap) I have done before and stopped because the recipe just was not working for us. However, just this week a close friend of mine shared her recipes that she used and I LOVE them. Prior to using the homemade soaps I would wash dishes by hand and let them air dry in the dishwasher. This way I am saving on water and not having to buy the expensive dishwasher soap as often. Just a couple of months ago I ran out of dishwasher soap and never bought more.
1. Homemade dishwasher soap (sharing recipe this week)
2. Homemade laundry soap (sharing recipe this week)
3. Re-use Ziploc baggies. If you use sandwich bags or the gallon bags, you can re-use them as long as there is no raw meat stored in them. All you have to do is wash them. I do this all the time. I do not even need to tell my children because they automatically save them.
4. Thrift stores. Yes thrift stores. Some people do not like the idea of thrift stores but let me tell you. I have saved quite a bit of money shopping at thrift stores. I have found some great items for real cheap. Such as this item or this. Just the other day I was able to pick up my daughter a nice pair of London Fog snow pants and snow boots for $13.50. In reality I paid $8.50 because I sold my daughter's old snowboard pants for $5. Snow pants at Wal-mart are about $18!
5. Coupons. I just started couponing this past summer and have saved a tremendous amount of money and built a stockpile. I have couponed in the past but this summer I learned how to coupon. I saw that I needed to stack my manufacturer coupons with store coupons while there is a sale going on. My husband is even all about coupons. My blessings have told me that they will coupon during college because they do not want to eat ramen noodles their entire college years. The best part is I have gotten some items for free or paid just cents for an item or two.
6. Meatless dinners. Each week I try to plan a meal or two without having to use meat. Meat is the most expensive part of a meal if you have meat as the main course. Usually our meatless dinner may be breakfast, we call this breakner. Or another meal may consist of fettuccine alfredo. Or you could make spaghetti without meat. I have done that, but not knowing meat was suppose to be added (did not learn how to cook until I was married). My step-dad does not let me live that down. Who knew back then that it was frugal :)
7. Homemade snacks. I try to make homemade snacks for my family. This may consist of breads, muffins, cookies, homemade applesauce, fruit smoothies, or popcorn. Along with this I make a large batch and freeze most of these items along with pancakes, waffles, and french toast.
8. Menu plans. When I menu plan we are less likely to go out to eat. Also, it is important to look at what you have planned. You do not want to go to make dinner and realize you did not take out the meat you needed. Or if you have cinnamon rolls for breakfast and you have to be out the door before they are ready. I have done both of these.
9. Turn lights off when not in the room. We have always turned lights off when we leave a room but since we own our house it is even more important. When we lived in military housing we did not have to pay the electric bill so if a light gets left on by accident it was not such a big deal to me. Well, that has changed. My family teases me about being so strict about turning off lights, but it is one bill that we can keep low and plus it helps the environment.
10. Stop spending. Yes we are still working on this one. This is ongoing for us. An important part to saving money is to stop unnecessary spending. The other day at the thrift store I had to stop myself from buying my son a shirt. He does not need anymore clothes. I was just buying it because it was a good deal. Sometimes we have to pass up good deals if it is not a need. Spending a dollar here and a dollar there does add up to be a whole lot of dollars in the end. So ask yourself next time you are shopping if you really NEED this item.
Do you have any frugal tips that you would like to share?

Today's Shopping Trip, 4 June 2012
Today the blessings and I went to five different stores. By the time we arrived home I was wiped out. I am thankful that the stores are in the same area because I feel that I had an overall good shop today. My goal was to stay within the range of $30 but I knew that I was not going to make that. So, I decided that the goal was $50.
Our first stop was Dollar General. I was not planning on stopping there until I received an email stating that the store had a twin pack of secret deodorant for $2.50 and I had a dollar off coupon. I had deodorant on my list anyways so I thought it would be wise to stop. I am glad I did! I walked around the store and did some price comparisons and now I know where to go for certain items.
Here is what we purchased:
2 boxes Pasta Roni $1 each
Secret deodorant $1.75 - $1 off coupon= 0.75cents
Overall Priced Paid:
$2.85
Our next stop was Walgreens. I really took my time in this store. I wanted to really pay attention to the sales and the prices. I also compared prices in the store and realized that the milk is about 70cents cheaper than any of the other stores. Now when hubby is on his way home and I need milk I know where to send him.
Our Walgreens items:
Tampax tampons $7.49-$1.00 off coupon= $6.49 and received $2 register rewards= $4.49
All Laundry Detergent $3.49-$1.00 off coupon= $2.49
Colgate Toothbrush $2.50-$.75 cent off coupon=$1.75 and received $1 register reward= 0.75cents
Overall Price Paid:
$11.47
Our next stop was Family Dollar. By this time I was getting somewhat tired and just wanted to get the items I went there for.
Here is what we purchased:
2-12packs of Pepsi $8-$2 coupon=$6
Pepto Bismol $2- $0.50 coupon= $1.50
Colgate toothpaste $1.00- $0.75coupon= $0.25
2 bags Doritos chips $7- $2 coupon= $5
Overall Price Paid:
$13.25
Right next door to the Family Dollar is the Piggly Wiggly. This was my first time in the store and I saw that the store is no longer Piggly Wiggly. The store is no longer offering the discount store cards which help for the in-store sales and gas at the Mobil that is located in the parking lot. I was not sure what to expect of the prices when I entered but have decided I will only shop there when they have sales. The store officially changes to Our Town Fresh Market tomorrow and the store has a new sales ad prices starting on Wednesday. A couple of the Wednesday sales were on my list so I am waiting til then to finish up the rest of the shopping. One thing I purchased was two pack of hot dogs. I was debating on purchasing these because I like to buy turkey franks or all beef hot dogs for my son, since he is the only one who eats them. However, I decided to go ahead and buy the regular hot dogs.
Here is what we purchased:
Lettuce $0.78
2 packs of hot dogs $0.88 each
Mozzarella shredded cheese $1.98
Overall Price Paid:
$4.52
Our last and finally store was Wal-mart. Let me tell you, we were tired by the time we reached this store. We were ready to be done. Wal-mart was where I spent the most for the day, but I was expecting that.
Here is what we purchased:
condensed milk $1.00
cooking spray $2.18
oil $2.78
2 packs of gum $2.00- $1.00 off coupon=$1.00
tea $3.48-$.55 off coupon=$2.93
2 packs of starburst $3.76-$1.00 off coupon=$2.76 (hubby will take a bag to work)
gallon of milk $3.23
pound of stick butter $3.48-$.75 off coupon=$2.73
eggs $1.92
bread $0.88
Overall Price Paid:
$21.92
The grand total for the shopping trip today was:
$54.01
I was $4.00 over what I wanted to spend but I am pretty happy with the end result. On Wednesday I will be heading back to Walgreens to snag a deal that will end up being free after using register rewards, manufacturer coupon, and receiving $5 back in register rewards. I will post that deal on Wednesday. I will also head to get cheese and bananas from the Our Town Market, and I might pick up some dishwasher tabs from Dollar General as well, but I need to decide if it is cheaper to just wash by hand or use tabs. What are your thoughts?

Starting To Use Walgreens To Save Money
This past weekend we traveled home for the weekend and I wanted to be as frugal as possible. My goal was to only spend $40 and we did well with that. I went over our budget by $8. That was my fault and I knew exactly what I did. God showed me. Overall, I am very happy that we were smart with our money and did not cave in to impulse spending. We had a few times where people asked us to go out to eat but we said thank you and politely declined. I did not budget well with our gas money. I planned on $60 but in reality we needed $80. That is fine though because I had some extra money set aside.
My plan for this week is to try and save as much as I can on groceries. Today, I am hitting the Walgreens to try and get some good deals there. The new town we live in has Walgreens, Family Dollar, Piggly Wiggly, Dollar General, and Wal-mart within a one mile radius of each other. I bought a Sunday paper yesterday and I am so glad I did. Sometimes I hesitate buying a paper because there have been times where the coupons where not worth the money spent. However, yesterday had some great coupons!
I did some research and learned how to play the Walgreens game. If you are interested in learning more you can go here to Money Saving Mom. She explains ways to save at Walgreens.
Today, I will be hitting Walgreens, Family Dollar, Piggly Wiggly, and possibly Wal-mart. I have not been in the Piggly Wiggly so I am not sure of the prices. I have seen their ad and the store offers some good prices but I am not sure exactly how well they stand with Wal-mart on certain items.
I am really enjoying finding new ways to save money! I want to make a nickel stretch into a dollar!
Wish me luck as I venture out to play the game!
I will post later today on how well I did.

Coupons With Meal Planning
If you have missed the first part to this series you may click here.
Since becoming more frugal and trying to expand our dollars I have learned that coupons can help. Before I sit down to make my menu plans I go to my usual coupon websites (here, here and here) and plan my meals around what is on sale. For example, every couple of weeks there is a coupon available for 75 cents off a pound of Butterball ground turkey and this tends to be around the time the Commissary marks down their ground turkey to 99 cents a pound. So in the end I purchase a pound of ground turkey for about 25 cents!
When you have found your coupons you can then plan your menus. Try to match your meals with your coupons or ingredients that could be used in many different meals. Also, if your store has a clearance section stop by to check it out. I have found many items on clearance that I have had coupons for.
Remember do not purchase something that you normally would not because you have a coupon. Of course there are exceptions; sometimes if I want to try something and I have coupon I then would purchase it. That way if I do not like it then I do not feel so guilty over the purchase.
Do you use coupons? Do you meal plan around coupons?

Ways to Lower Your Grocery Bill~ Menu Planning
I have been asked by many how I get my grocery bill under $100 a pay period or $200 a month. To be honest I was shocked by the questions because I thought I was not even close to some other bloggers who are way under that. Then talking with others and hearing how much they spend each month I realized I was way under their spending. I thought that I would do a short series on lowering your growing bill. Please know that I am nowhere close to being an expert and these are tips that I have learned along the way.
